I heard such a perfomance a couple years ago, the substitution (on 2
days notice) being necessitated by the illness of the piccolo trumpet
player.
The clarinetist was Ross Edwards, principal of the Kitchener-Waterloo
(Ontario) Symphony. I was surprised at how much the Eb clarinet did
sound like the usual piccolo trumpet in this famous part.
