<<Gosh, I am surprised to hear someone say this. Didn't you have a chance to
play in an orchestra in high school?>>

I played in my high school orchestra some 30 years ago but do not recall ever
having had to transpose by sight. To this day, I would not trust myself to do
it right during a performance.

While learning how to tranpose CAN be a valuable skill, there is at least one
pitfall. A friend plays alto saxophone and clarinet. He tranposes by sight
when he plays with C instruments, a habit he picked up when he belonged to a
small dance band back in the '50s. Problem is: he sometimes (and
unpredictably) tranposes even when he is playing an Eb alto sax part or Bb
clarinet part. If he goes on autopilot during a performance, it's a real
train wreck!
