Perhaps they are afraid that the body of clarinetists will be scornful
of their inability to transpose.

And since when has the action of some or even many determined what is
the technically correct thing to do? The question you posed could be
posed by anyone at the beginning of a technology or political direction
as evidence that that technology or direction is of no value.
