I've never watched "Law and Order" but I am continually annoyed by the
use of synthesized clarinet and bass clarinet on "The X-Files" (composer
Mark Snow). The golem episode was especially excruciating.

On the other hand, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (background music composer
Chris Beck) uses real woodwinds on occasion, though they use synthesizers
for some strings and rock-flavored music. One of the Star Trek series
last week (can't remember whether it was "Voyager" or "Deep Space Nine")
had a very nice bass clarinet line. And, of course, we can't forget
Harry Kim's clarinet playing on "Voyager." (Gee, I wish I could find one
perfect reed and keep replicating it...)
