A message was posted that not being able to transpose is the reason people
purchase C Clarinets. I'm guessing that was bait to open the thread to a
much larger context!

There is no question that owning a C clarinet helps avoid problems in
transposition. However, some orchestras use C clarinets when the part
calls for it, just as some use D clarinets when the part calls for it. I
know that Chicago frequently uses C clarinets and John Yeh moves back and
forth between Eb and D clarinets when asked to by the music. However, I
am reasonably certain that all of those players in that orchestra clarinet
section are very capable at transposition at sight.
