Malerne was an instrument builder - I think he worked for Buffet. He made
clarinets in his spare time. Bass clarinets with his marque are quite
common. I think he had his own shop for a while. They were a lower grade
instrument when new - and they aren't new now.

I have played all wood bass clarinets, that were older instruments and brand
new plastic ones. The new plastic ones are much better. Both the Vito and
the Yamaha student model can be purchased for around $700/800 mail order
from places like the woodwind and the brasswind.

I also think that there are used instrument dealers out there, like
www.playitagainbob.com who have the Malerne, reconditioned, for around $400.
Personally I would MUCH rather have a new or newer but used Yamaha or Vito
plastic bass clarinet than ANY of the older bass clarinets, even the Buffet
models, due to better intonation of modern bass clarinets.
