Here's a good one for the list to mull over:
How do you know if your clarinet needs, or could profit from, a replacement
barrel, whether it be Moennig, Chadash, Fobes, Scott, whoever?
I have tried many barrels on my Bb clarinet. I keep coming back to the fact
that for this clarinet, tone and intonation are best with the barrel that
came with it. I have another, older, retired clarinet that I am certain could
use a replacement.
How to tell, other than order some barrels and try them out?

How to tell, other than order some barrels and try it out? answer - go
to a Clarinet Convention, or larger store and try them out in person. The
only possible way would be to try it and find out for yourself if it would
help. I would estimate that a good 90% of Clarinets would benefit by using
a tapered or other modified as compared to a straight barrel. Better tone,
and improved intonation. When I studied in Philadelphia, standard issue was
a Moennig Barrel.
