I know many people who vigorously promote the use of a mouthpiece patch for that exact reason. The vibration of the mouthpiece via your top teeth gives your brain a distorted perception of your sound. One player from the Baltimore Symphony even told me that he uses double lip when he's trying out mouthpieces because of this "rattle." I started using one a couple of months ago and I had to get adjusted to not "hearing/feeling" that rattle. I had a jazz gig where I felt overwhelmed but everyone in the audience said that they heard me fine. I guess it's just a matter of time before I get used to using the patch.
