Clark Brody told me he experienced exactly this. Apparently he toured with
the Goldman Band for a summer (in a section that included a lot of monster
players from NYC, including Gino Cioffi). After playing crappy band music in
the middle of a loud situation for a whole summer, not being able to listen
properly to his own playing during performance, he discovered that he really
needed to rebuild his playing. He said it was like starting all over again.

So much for symphonic band being 'educational.'
