Has anyone else ever played Carl Davis' score for the 1920's version of
"Ben-Hur"? I did it a couple of years ago, and besides having a lot of fun,
learnt a new definition of pain in the process. The principal trumpeter,
who was directly behind me, is a giant Ukrainian who can get phenomenal
volume with minimum effort. And when he was playing piccolo trumpet during
the chariot race scene, earplugs and soundshield did very little to
alleviate the pain. Having seven percussionists didn't help either,
especially when they were using the thundersheet......
I would have to say, though, that the four guys who play in youth orchestra
with me do tend to shut up when asked to. We use soundshields if it's
anything too huge, but generally it's alright. Mind you, that probably has
something to do with the fact that although these guys are very good,
they're not professionals, and so lack those extra few decibels!
