I have two clarinets, one in B-flat and one in A and I can play a
written low D on either of them. First, they are both full Boehm
instruments which means that I can get a low E-flat naturally.
Then I had a piece made that fits between the lower joing and the
bell. It was described in The Clarinet magazine about 10 years
ago in an article by Bill McColl. When that piece is inserted, I
can play the low D by fingering low E-flat. Of course, I lose the
low E-flat when I do that.

I got the piece made to play the Levin completion of the incomplete
quintet for clarinet and strings by Mozart. It requires the low D.
