No, I think you've taken me wrong, Tom. But before I explain why, I'd
like to say that I had no intention of offending you, and I'm very
sorry that you were offended.

So, you'd made a joke, with a serious side to it, in which you cast
yourself as a 'mediocre' player, but nevertheless able to play well in
tune on your instrument.

I responded to the serious side with a serious side of my own, which I
do think is important and worth underlining, as I explained in another
thread.

But I also made a joke of my own, purely by word association.

In your joke, the 'better' player has the worse time of it with the
intonation. In my joke, what the better player says sometimes doesn't
make sense.

So I wasn't referring to *you* in:

...though now I appreciate it was possible to misunderstand, as indeed
you did.

Your subsequent:

...I wrongly took to be a response to the serious side of what I'd said,
as my explanation that you quote above indicates.

I hope that clears it up. As our exchanges in the past perhaps
indicate, I have great respect for your work, even if sometimes we
disagree.
