Apologies, Bill. I posted the above, because I didn't read you
properly after your second sentence: I thought you were making a joke.

It's a problem. I once sat in front of the D trumpet in the Alpine
Symphony.

Nowadays, some orchestras in the UK have plastic shields that the
players in front of the brass use to, well, shield themselves. Are
these available in the US?
