"Has anyone seen any other innovative support methods for Clarinet besides
the neck straps? The straps, which hook to the thumb support, tend to pull
at a bad angle and it seems something better would be possible. There is
this contraption advertised in Woodwind/Brasswind that looks a little like
the landing gear of the lunar lander. Has anyone had any experience with
this?"

I own and operate a FHRED (that's Finger Hand Retraining Ergonomic Device)
from Quodlibet in Boulder, CO that could be similar to the thing in WWBW. It
attaches to the thumb rest, is fully height adjustable, and sits on the chair
while one is playing. I LOVE it! My Leblanc LL is an amazingly heavy
instrument that I just couldn't play for very long at all without my right
wrist groaning under the weight. Best part of this, for me, is that it gets
out of my way when I have to switch to another horn -- it stays attached to
the clarinet, nothing to unhook. No, you don't need a longer peg to
accommodate it. It comes in different styles and lengths to handle
differences in thumb rests, people heights, and budgets.
