The question of what would be good music to use in church comes up every few
months. Searching the archives may turn up additional suggestions, some from
people who may no longer be on the list. I find it interesting that, this
time around, most of the recommendations so far have tended to be solemn in
nature rather than joyous. Someone may have already mentioned these pieces
this time around but just in case, if you are looking for music in this vein,
don't forget the Baermann "Adagio" or the Rachmaninov "Vocalise."

One piece I've wanted to do since the first time I heard the "Messiah" (even
before Richard Stoltzman recorded it) is "And He Shall Feed His Flock."
Also, if you want something to do with choir, Bach wrote an oboe obligato for
"O Sacred Head Now Wounded" that works fine with a clarinet. And speaking of
Stoltzman, the "Pie Jesu" from Lloyd Weber's "Requiem" is another
possibility. I've done movements (not always the slow ones) from the Mozart
trios for clarinets and basset horn (we used a cello for the basset horn part
-- sorry Dan, it's all we had). Our recorder quartet has done everything
from renaissance to swing. The bottom line is, IMHO, that just about any
well-written music can work. I remember one list member saying he had used
the Stravinsky "Three Pieces" to great effect. (Consider: the second
movement for a prelude, the first movement for an offertory and the last
movement for a postlude.)

Best regards,
Jack Kissinger
