Tuning is an art. Whether all, or even most people can learn it effectivel=
y is open for debate. But it definitely requires certain skills, the =
easiest one to impart would be to listen for the 'wa-wa's - the warbeling =
of tone between two notes. The faster the warbeling, the greater the =
difference between the tones. One more thing is that most people can =
notice flatness much more easily than sharpness.

I use a little keyboard (A=3D440) with a transposer to tune, at least at =
home.

I recently shifted from the oboe to the clarinet, and I never realized how =
hard it was to tune a clarinet. Keeping an oboe in tune requires shifting =
the location of the reed in the mouth ever so slightly (among other =
things), but not so much with the clarinet. Furthermore, I am terribly =
sharp in the lower register and fairly flat in the higher register. =20

So, I would like to know how to balance this variety. Does anybody have =
some generalized techniques that work for them keeping in mind the =
differences between instruments?

Thanks.

I have and use a tuner. And I admit that I do not have an ear for =
subtle=20
differences in pitch. I would like to be able to detect these differences =
as=20
well as knowing which way to change or who needs to change but I have yet =
to=20
meet anyone who can actually tell me how. But at least with my tuner I =
can=20
adjust my instrument to play 3 notes in tune until I learn how to take =
care=20
of the rest. Open for suggestions.
