I too appreciated Roger's response. But I also appreciated Ed's
subsequent reply. And in fact I felt slightly chastened in my
appreciation of Roger's response as a result of what Ed said.

Ed's reply made it clear he had been talking about a one-off experience
that had surprised him. He hadn't claimed that that experience was
generalisable across all playing situations, even though he complimented
Tom on the design of the Leblanc.

The point was that his experience with the tuner was at least *possible*
on his Leblanc.

I too very occasionally play really well in tune without very much
effort, perhaps better in tune than I 'deserve'. It's because
everything happens to be going my way on that occasion.

Usually it's something that occurs in a real musical situation, but I'm
sure that I'd then also be able to match the tuner, if I tried.

On this occasion, Ed found that being able to match the tuner occurred
practically without *any effort at all*, and he wanted to tell us that.

I wonder whether perhaps he had a particularly good reed that day, as
well as playing on the Leblanc.
