Bill,
Back when the Internet wasn't nearly as full of (what we computer snobs
call) "clueless newbies" there were still these messages being sent via
BBoards and news and whatever. Remember, this one started in 1987, well
in advance of the "easy Internet". I can show you ones from the '70s,
and back then it wasn't that easy to get connected to the Arpanet.

I'm constantly surprised that we don't get _more_ of these things,
considering that there's got to be some phenomenal multiplier between
the late 80s and today in the number of people online. At least now it's
easy to connect to "urban legends" sites and double-check the info.
Wasn't so easy back when (the alt.urbanlegends newsgroup was _way_ too
busy to keep up with, especially for someone trying to keep up with
comp.lang.c and comp.lang.fortran back in the mid 80s)

Give the newbies a chance - they'll catch on with a bit of help :^)
