All that's really needed to prevent this is to make sure they dry off the
reed and swab the mouthpiece when they put their instruments away. If they
do this much, it won't matter if they store the reed in a case or on the
mouthpiece (I always store mine on the mouthpiece). The other side of this
is that many of the kids whose reeds look like this don"t _ever_ take the
reed off the mouthpiece - they lick it it or run water from a tap over the
mouthpiece to wet the reed when they start.
