In a message dated 99-04-22 23:12:01 EDT, my memory crashed:

<< I believe his full name is "Whoopie John Goldfahrt" or something very
close>>

Back from rehearsal and found one of the records: **Whoopee** John
**Wilfahrt's** Golden Favorites, Decca Stereo LP DL74139. The biggies
include: Julinda Polka, St. Paul Waltz, Joan Pa Snippin and Nikolina -
Schottische, Barbara Polka, The Blue Skirt Waltz, Springtime Polka, Clarinet
Polka, Life in the Finnish Woods, O Susanna Schottisch, Homecoming Waltz,
Beer Barrel Polka, and a German waltz medley of Lauterbach Waltz, Du, Du
Liegst Mir Im Herzen, Auch Du Lieber Augustin, and Freut Euch Des Lebens.
You just gotta love it!

The liner notes (remember them?) go on to note that, "Whoopee John is
credited with being the "father" of the modern polka band and although he's
no longer the sprightly lad who entertained his New Ulm, Minnesota neighbors
on his precious concertina, he is now, and has been for some time, a
considerably polished musician, and is 'whooping' in up stronger than ever."
That was probably written 40 years ago.

So there you have it.

Don Gross
La Canada, California

p.s. If anyone actually cares, the back of the album jacket also lists two
more of his Decca recordings: "Whoopee" John, the Polka Poppa (DL74068) and
Polkas and Waltzes (DL78907).
