Oops. I didn't have the book with me when I typed the last message.
"whoopee John" is an ad on the back of the real polka book. The one
we played out of is the International Polkas No. 1 for orchestra
compiled by Joseph P. Elsnic published by Vitak-Elsnic Co. out of
Downer's Grove Illinois.
The instrumentation is for violin, bass, 2 clarinets, alto and tenor
sax, trombone, 2 cornets, drums, piano, and yes, accordian. We played
with 4 clarinets, 2 trumpets, a tuba, a transposed french horn part,
and a trombone and it sounded great!
Some of the songs in the book are the Chicken Polka (there's a great
dance for that one too!), the Helena Polka, the Laughing Polka, the
Jenny Lind Polka, the Clarinet Polka. There's 17 of them, but those
are my favorites. Some of them have really challenging clarinet
parts.
Another good polka book I've played out of is Harry L. Alford's Hungry
Five in Germany published by Hansen House in miami Beach. It's kind
of cheesy, and the songs stop so that someone can read the wisecracks
that are printed in the front (that's optional, of course). All the
titles are in German, and the songs are just little clips of polkas.
There's lots of good spots to cut them off or repeat.
Hope this helps!!
Meridith
