No, but they may be using their jaw and the muscles of the jaw in ways
similar to many clarinetists.
My point, Mark, was that those whose TMJ is due to or aggravated by playing
the clarinet with biting would be eliminated or reduced to a bearable
level. TMJ is certainly more wide spread than I thought according to your
information. But TMJ sufferer's problems can only be made increasingly
worse by the constant tension in the jaw and the muscles due to biting for
reed control.
I have some degree of jaw/bite problems, but they don't really bother my
playing and (most importantly) my playing doesn't bother
them........because I don't bite when I play.
Thanks for the information though, it is amazing how many people are
affected by this in one degree or another. I had no idea!
