Greetings,

The topic of Moennig register tubes came up last week on this list.
Moennig apparently made special vents with an hour glass taper, similar
to his barrels. On page 90 of the current (March 1999) issue of The
Clarinet, there is an ad for "The Vent", a product sold by Andy
Crisanti, principal Clarinet in the Fort Worth Symphony. Andy says has
had a set of Moennig vents that he owns duplicated and is offering them
for sale at $40 per vent. They are the same for Bb and A clarinet. In
the ad he states that they "provide for improved throat Bb, long B
natural, and a more centered and focused sound for A, B and C above the
staff." Sounds good to me!

I studied privately with Andy for my last two years of high school . He
was a major influence on my playing and I have many fond memories of my
studies with him. I remember my first lesson. I was a cocky 11 grader,
and brought in a tape of a performance of the Mozart Concerto that I had
recently given with The Youth Orchestra of Greater Ft. Worth so he
could hear how good I was[!] He listened to it, then proceeded to tell
me in great detail everything that was wrong with it [Quite a bit more
than I had realized!]. I had intended to study orchestral excerpts with
him, but he would not allow that until I had completed some good solid
work on fundamentals, including Cavallini Caprices, the Labanchi Method,
and articulation and LH studies from Langenus.

After one of my first lessons, he told me to leave my instrument with
him. When I picked it up several days later, he had put cork pads in
the upper joint, cleaned and adjusted all the keys and tuned the
instrument (tape in tone holes) where needed! No charge of course. I
was very surprised at how much better the instrument played.
