I had braces on my lower teeth for four years. It took a little while for
my lip to harden up (playing hurt like anything until it did!) but once my
lip was toughened up, clarinet playing was no problem. One of the
trumpeters I know actually had special plastic guards made - they slipped
over his braces whenever he played. I didn't find that to be necessary, but
for some people it might be.
