To get a good hold of the mouthpiece I just put the mouthpiece on the
barrel. Then you won't have to carry the weight of the clarinet when
you put a new reed on. I also lick the reed with my tongue before
putting it on the mouthpiece. I can look back on many years without
flying reeds ;-)

Besides the fact that a string is cheap, I find it's simplicity
charming.
