Content-Description: "cc:Mail Note Part"

I have friends who had to get braces and they seemed to adjust to playing with
braces just fine. I, myself, had an expandable retainer that I took and
adjusted every week or two with the end of a paper clip or the little thing they
gave me until I lost the little wrech thing they gave me to adjust it. I had
this from ninth to tenth grade and ever since then I've had a plain old retainer
that you get after you've had braces or any type of alignment done to your
teeth. I can tell you for me when I first got my retainer, it hurt a lot
sometimes when I would take it out to play, but now it doesn't really bother me
at all and I'm told I have a nice tone by several of the music professors and
music majors here at the college I attend. I hope this will help you.

My 18 year old son, who is heading for a career as a clarinetist, has been
advised to have orthodontic treatment ( braces) followed by orthognathic
surgery. This is to correct an underbite (class 3 malocclusion) which our
dentist holds will lead to drastic degradation of especially the front teeth
in the future.

I would very much like to hear from anyone who has had to undergo the same
or similar treatment, what it meant for their playing and how soon (if ever)
they got back to the same level of proficiency.

Kind regards
Danny Cohen
