To avoid this problem I always put the mouthpiece onto the instrument
first, and then wrap it.

I know.  But I always had trouble doing it that way.  I could never get
it as tight as I wanted to.  And It always felt so awkward holding
both.  Oh well, it's all in the past anyway.
