I used to use a string in college.  I stopped using it after my hands
slipped while wrapping and I sent a mouthpiece I loved flying across a
room. GAAK!!  I was using wristwatch bracelet cord.  It never stretched,
shrank, broke or anything.  It held very well, and allowed for a very
tight wrap.  If you can't find it , e-mail me and I'll check to see if I
can find out where I got it.

For what it's worth, now I use a Rovner ED (original model) and find it
to be the equal of string.
