I'm going to go really out here, but In mho, if you have to support you
clarinet in your legs you might not be doing the embouchure the most
beneficial way. Notice I didn't say the "right " way. I've played double lip
since my first notes. I started studying with Iggy Gennusa when I was 16, He
had one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard live! He showed me that
when he played he could move the mouthpiece around in his mouth while he was
playing. He said it needed to be that loose in your mouth so the reed could
vibrate easier. Now trust me on this one this is what I call "Myth" no 2. It
IS possible to bite playing double lip. You just won't do it the first day
you try it. But rest assured in 6 months you can have a top lip that
resembles shoe leather. The other thing is this if the reed is able to
vibrate I think you can sound just as good playing single lip, I just think
it's harder to resist the urge to use to much pressure. I played double lip
standing anytime I've played a solo with the band, and I play Simka hora
from hell klezmer band gigs standing up. I know some clarinetists who have
trouble with endurance on these gigs also. I still remeber the first time I
got to play Iggy's set up and it was WAY lighter than mine. He said, " You
know Tom, you should be able to hold the clarinet up in a 5mph wind and it
should work." I must admit now I think he was on to something
