Tryptophan is an amino acid, which, by itself, does not have an effect on
your neurological functions. Tryptophan is however,a building block in the
synthesis of a neurotransmitter called serotonin, which affects sleep,
mood, attention, and learning. Serotonin is an inhibitory transmitter,
which means it can have a negative effect on its target functions. So, it
is actually the serotonin which will make you sleepy.
