This virus is one of the few that is "for real." It's been circulating since
early January. It comes to you in the form of an attachment to an e-mail, an
"exe" file.

If you open the e-mail that contains it, no harm is done.

However, if you run the "Happy99.exe" file, two things will happen: (1) you
will see a nice "Happy New Year" fireworks display; and (2) your computer
will be infected. Then the first time you send an e-mail to any given
address, the virus will automatically send a second e-mail to the same
address, with the "Happy99.exe" file attached. The virus keeps track of the
addresses to which your computer has sent the virus, and sends it only once
to each address.

If you receive the virus: Delete the e-mail immediately, without opening
it. Then go to your "trash" folder (or equivalent) and delete the message
from there.

If you run the file and your computer becomes infected: Go to the McAfee
site, the Microsoft site or any of several other anti-virus sites for
instructions on how to clean the virus out of your computer.

Being on eleven different mailing lists, I've received the "Happy99.exe" file
25 or 30 times so far this year. But I have always deleted it (as we ALL
should do with ANY attached file, if we're not absolutely sure of its
contents), and my computer has not been infected.
