Mario,
Boosey didn't publish your so-called "original edition" because
Copland didn't want it. He was convinced by Goodman that it was a good
idea to keep it the "easier" way. Kyle Koughlin wrote a DMA thesis on the
Concerto. It is in the Peabady Conservatory library. I suggest that you
contact the library for a copy of it if you want I have seen some of
the passages he changed and frankly, changing them didn't make a whole lot
of difference to the musical effect. A few more 16-notes here or there are
not really an issue.
Don't forget, many composers just don't know all the problems of
the instruments they write for. So it is possible that Copland's original
really was overly difficult in spots - Goodman's technical shortcomings
notwithstanding. Charlie Neidich is a technical whiz so
nothing would be particularly hard for him but for the rest of us, it is
NICE to have a playable concerto like the Copland. Don't be so quick to
look for a harder version. You might just get what you wished for - in
spades!
