When I heard Paquito with the National Symphony last June, he had just
gotten the Rossi clarinet. It's a beauty, visually and sonically. I very
nearly wrote that the clarinet sounds gorgeous (which it does), but upon
some reflection, I decided that it's the player that makes the sound, not
the instrument. I can say this with some assurance, having heard Paquito
on CD with his previous instrument, which I think was a Selmer Centered
Tone which he played with a crystal mouthpiece (Pomarico, maybe - I can't
remember). Last June he was still using the crystal on the Rossi - last
Thursday he had a hard rubber mouthpiece (I didn't ask - I think it's an
unhealthy fixation!). But the sound is always the same. Like I said, I
believe it's the player, not the equipment.

Nevertheless, Teri - I'm with you - I covet that instrument (a sign of
how pervasive the above mentioned sickness is!). I'm saving my money!

And I have to say that I haven't the foggiest what the "Post" was talking
about! (not the first time, either!) *I* didn't hear any "clarinet
percussion".
