Use a reed knife to remove "dust" rather than carving the cane. You do not
remove hunks of cane. To scrape, let the blade be behind / where you want
to scrape (lousy term). The top of the knife blade rests on your thumb and
uses the thumb to pivot from. Rotate the knife with the wrist (or /_)
and let the weight of the blade and the "edge" of sharpness on the metal
remove a dusting of cane. This is NOT like carving an animal out of Ivory
soap.

Practice on un-playable reeds.
