A couple of years ago, the administrators of the internet flute list
formed a committee to study beta blockers in some detail. One of the
members of the committee is a pharmacist. The rather extensive report

I recommend that anyone using or contemplating using these substances

this information.
I was told by a physician that one of the greatest potential problems is
that beta blockers can lower the blood pressure so much that some
people,
especially diabetics, may go into a coma, and it is even possible for
them
to cause death. And, as we know, there are perhaps millions of people
in
the world who are diabetic and do not know it. That is why doctors who
prescribe them will want to examine you in detail before doing so, and
why
they will experiment to determine the correct dosage for each person.
That is also why it is so dangerous to take them without a prescription,
and I have heard that they are sometimes passed out backstage at some
major symphony orchestras, almost as if they were candy.
I'm always leery of the practice of trying to find success in life, or
in
music, from a bottle.
