David Blumberg asked:

I've only been playing for 10 months and haven't done any performing but
have developed an occassional problem with hiccups. This may be a
unique experience to me but I find when I try playing faster than I'm
used to, I sometimes appear to swallow air and start hiccupping. This
happens when I practicing speeding up pieces (probably too fast compared
to what I'm used to, rather than gradually) and am not paying any
attention to my breathing but concentrating more on my fingering.

By slowing down a little bit, and working on breathing more naturally,
the hiccups disappear.

When I'm relaxed with my playing, I usually breath in through my nose
and blow out through my mouth, all of which seems quite natural to me.
Once I try to pick up speed, I occassionally seem to breath in through
my mouth or breath too deeply through my nose, which is where I think
I'm getting into hiccupping problems. I haven't quite figured all of
this out but keep coming back to the solution of just slowing down a bit
and trying to breath more naturally.

This is just my empirical observation of a problem that's appeared for
me during the past several weeks. I have no idea if it approaches what
your student is experiencing or is helpful towards solving that problem.
