Having just started the clarinet after playing the oboe for a number of =
years, I have found the double-lip method to be physically easier than the =
single-lip method. I also notice that my tone is more stable and I get =
fewer sqawks. I guess I am using a modified version of the oboe emboucher =
on the clarinet. Since I am not yet with a teacher, I have not gotten any =
more experienced opinions of my tone. But at least I am able to play =
notes steadily and with growing ease. I doubt I will ever play the =
single-lip method with any regularity. Besides, I don't like the =
vibrations going through my teeth ;)

I agree with you George. My teacher had me play double lip when I warm up
to help me stop biting and it definitely helps. I do not practice it as =
much
as I should but when I feel myself tightening for the higher notes I =
always
add double lip back into my warm up. Double lips makes your embouchure do
the work and rely on tongue position rather then use you teeth do the =
work.
My teacher mentioned something about Robert Marcellus playing double lip =
at
one time in his career but he changed back to single lip playing. I =
suggest
that if anyone has a problem with biting that they add this to there warm =
up
in some sort of fashion. I like to do tonguing exercises and scales with
double lip.
