And to which I replied earlier that =22Schalltrichter auf=22 has no
meaning for a bass clarinet. It is physically impossible to
follow these instructions. Thus the direction and to whom it
applies must be considered to be an editorial conclusion and not
necessarily Mahler's. He undoubtedly wrote the term in the
autograph but was not clear as to whom the direction should apply.
It could not possibly apply to bass clarinets (or for that matter
to heckelphones, contrabassoons, etc.).

I do agree that the effect is supposed to be aural, not visual.
