Don,
You've already gotten the piano suggestion as well as the kinderclarinet idea. I think we discussed pros and cons of the kinderclarinet last year. I do have a suggestion that I'm not sure was made. If he wants to play flute how about starting him on recorder- no problem with producing a sound. Soprano Recorder has similar fingerings to flute/sax/clarinet upper register/. Contrary to what most school kids believe it is a real instrument with a pretty healthy repertoire. He (and everyone else) may take it more seriously after seeing a recorder performance- either solo or a consort.
