There is that smaller clarinet (the name escapes me presently) which has
slightly simplified keys and is pitched in Eb, made especially for
children. My mind's blanking on the name ...

In a sense it wouldn't be much different than starting a child on a
fractional size violin, and the price (again from my fuzzy memory) was
less than or around $300.00.
