Yeh, probably right. I used rush for years, and about 10 years ago started
using my knife. I have used a stone mostly (learned of course from an
oboist) to sharpen my knife, experimented with a steel rod (went back to
the stone), and just bought a hand-held gadget for sharpening V blade
knifes called "the 2 in 1 Quicksharp". It didn't ruin the knife - yet.
I myself find that there is as much control with the knife as was with the
rush, and I can work with the reed on the mouthpiece. Again, the knife has
to be "double reed players" sharp. The knife I use is an RDG (V Blade),
very heavy, never chatters. Some knifes chatter like crazy when scraping -
throw those away, or use them for steak.
