After you found equipment that you're comfortable with, make sure you're voicing correctly. Be conscious where your tongue is and how it's shaped. My teacher put it best when he said that the clarinet doesn't sound good when played "in the center" of each note. It sounds best when the sound in pushed into the higher end of the spectrum, giving a clearer and more focused sound.
