What other than a stone do I use to sharpen my reed knife... my husband!

Seriously though, my teacher started talking about reed preparation and then adjustment when I was in 9th grade. Since that was the year I started private lessons I don't know what his normal practice was. I also don't remember if I asked him before he brought it up. For school aged kids I think I'd skip the knife part- first of all you don't want to have to keep sharpening it and they really don't need to be carrying it to school. Things have really changed! I used to keep a single edged razor blade in my case- a handy scraper for reeds. Now I'm sure someone would have done a locker search and suspended me as a potentially violent little clarinetist!
Sanding- or filing the back of the reed is very simple and has saved countless reeds for me as has thinning the tip a bit. While I wouldn't get deep into the finer points of adjusting yet I think an introduction is in order- more when they ask.
