Well, now wait Dan - isn't the bass clarinet bell *always* up?!? Now if
he'd said "Bells down"...(that I'd like to see!!)

Here is about the funniest it really happened story that I have ever heard.
Gigliotti told this to me in a lesson some 12 years ago. The Phila. Orchestra
was on tour in Germany, and was playing Mahler's Sym #1. The piece started. The
person playing Eb (was not Don M.) on stage realized that he had forgotten to
bring his Eb on stage. OH NO!!! He slinked off of the stage (kinda crouched
over and snuck off stage), and ran down stairs to get his Eb Clarinet. Upon
coming back to the stage, the stagehand would not let him back on stage "no
entry during performance". He talked the guy into letting him back on stage,
and he slinked back to his chair. He looks down - NO BELL!!!!!!!!!! Soooooo, he
figured that he can play the long B's by putting the clarinet between his leg.
The sound was God awful, out of tune, and hilarious!! Dut, da dut, dut,
dut, daaaaaaah(1/4 step sharp), dut, da dut, dut, daaah.
