Take two strips of leather...maybe 2" by 8"...and a piece of wood, same
width, about 4" longer than the leather. Glue them to to wood... one with
the rough side facing out, the other with the smooth side out. Go to an
auto parts store and get some valve grinding compound...say 600 grit... and
some jewelers rouge. Put the compound on the rough side leather strip, and
rub the rouge into the smooth side leather strip. This is your strop. After
getting a good edge on the knife with a stone, use the coarse side of the
strop on the knife edge, then the smooth side. When you used the stone, you
should have moved the knife like you were trying to cut a very thin slice
off of the stone. When you use the strop, move the blade like you're
trying to smooth down the leather with the blade, not slice it. This leaves
you with an edge that you can shave with. It then takes very little effort
to scrape your reeds.
