On 4/4, James asked
"Just how should one, as ignorant as I currently am, go about purchasing an
instrument that plays well, sounds good and will last, ack!, and God forbid,
even fetch me some of my hard earned dollars back if I choose to sell it and
purchase
the latest and greatest when Science or Religion makes that available?"

James - These are my suggestions; I'm sure you'll get lots more.

Read/study (about various manufacturers, models, prices; about other's
opinions [lots on this list]); converse with your instructor, if you have
one).

See how much you can afford, as well as how much flexibility you have to go
over your target price, if the horn of your dreams is just a bit (or a lot)
more.

Listen - try out lots of different manufacturers and models; when you settle
on one, try as many as practical. What sounds the best? What is easiest for
you to play?

Remember that you are the one who will be living with the horn for a (long)
while. If you don't have a good feeling about it when you play it, don't buy
it.
