Subj: [kl] Bells up in Mahler
Date: Mon, 5 Apr 1999 21:50:32 -0400

I believe the matter of bells up to be ill thought out by the
editors of the Mahler symphonies. At the very time that the
soprano clarinets are directed to play bells up, the bass clarinet
is invariably given the same direction. It is as if no thought at
all were given to the impossibility of that act for bass. I suspect
that the Mahler autograph is unclear in terms of his placement of
"Bells up" and the editor, in order to play it safe, puts it everywhere,
but the matter cannot apply to the b.c.
