Not only that, as any woodworker or machinist will tell you, tools used for different types of wood or different types of plastic are themselves constructed differently, even hand-held reamers (fluting, edge angles, etc.). I'm sure Clark Fobes and other can relate their stories of trying to find the right power & hand bits for repeatable high-accuracy cutting.

This evening, after I get back home, I'm going to excerpt a bit from the Benade book "Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics" and explain some of the ways why materials can and do affect the sound :^) So far I've talked about wall vibration - which has a very small amplitude. There are other properties which, given the right case, can affect the sound. I don't have the book handy right now, since I'm supposed to be working :^)

For those that don't own this marvelous book, I highly recommend it. The math is at a high school level and doesn't go much past a radical sign. There are thought and actual experiments at the end of every chapter.

As reference books go, it's dense - for those that study computer languages, it's on the line of the K & R 'C' book, only bigger. Each page is packed full of material to mull over. If you'd like a copy, I'd recommend contacting Amazon.com through either www.sneezy.org (I get a very small percentage of the price of 13.56) or through Gary Van Cott's site (www.vcisinc.com) so he can get the very small percentage :^)
