Because clarinetists in general are a hide-bound lot. One of the major
instrument reps told me he hated to go to the Clarinet Fests because no
one wanted to try anything but Buffet. So he wasted 3-4 days that he
could have been on the road serving paying customers. He offered as a
contrast the Flute Conventions, where 1500-2000 flutists would at least
*try* everything in sight, even if they didn't all buy one. I think
things have changed a bit in the recent past, but we still see the
mindless "Buffet is Best" syndrome among clarinetists who ought to know
better - it's the instrument that matters, not the brand logo stamped on
it. We see it on this list all the time.

BTW, this is said with all due respect to Buffet (and our list companion,
Francois Kloc), which, especially in the recent past, has returned to
making very nice instruments.
