Your're probably right. I started playing a Bundy Mazzeo after playing
for 3 years--my father was the band director, and he used me as a guinea
pig. Here in Georgia, the Mazzeo was what a lot of directors started
their beginners on in the late '60's and the '70's.
I moved on to a Series 10 in 1971--I still play it.

I've never missed any important fingerings, and my Mazzeo system has
never needed repair.

I seem to remember Mr. Friedland saying that the bell was to improve
"bell tones." I thought it was just to look different. They are more
fragile than regular bells--I broke one as a teenager and complained
about it to Mr. Mazzeo. He just told me to pay more attention to what I
was doing.
